Respectful mosh pits and more with Diet Cig and friends

A night of indie rock goodness at The Mothlight

Last Sunday night at the Mothlight was as refreshing as the 70 degree days Asheville had seen over the winter weekend. The lineup was full of talented young artists from all over the world: Diet Cig, Great Grandpa and The Spook School. All three acts really meshed well together and were perfectly suited for this awesome tour. Their sounds really complimented each other and kept the energy levels and fun off the charts.

Get ready to collectively cry happy tears together

Tomorrow night at The Mothlight, New York punk rockers Diet Cig will bring their poppy brand of songwriting to the West Asheville stage. Openers Great Grandpa and The Spook School are there to join in on the fun too. This well-rounded bill of performances guarantees a night of punk rock blessings for you and whoever comes with.

Jens Lekman delivers pure magic at The Mothlight

One big 'ol party

This past Thursday night was a special one over at The Mothlight in West Asheville all thanks to Jens Lekman. The weather outside the venue was chilly and the air was filled with excitement. The sold-out show was already packed even before opener Peter Oren took the stage. People outside were begging for tickets because this was gonna be one of the best shows of the year and we all knew it.

Yay for Jens!

The swedish singer stops by AVL

Tomorrow night Jens Lekman will grace the stage at the Mothlight. Hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden, he's made room on his tour for some very lucky US cities, including Asheville. He's a global indie pop prince with both critical success and an adoring fanbase all over the world. His music is influenced by artists like Stephin Merritt, Jonathan Richman and Belle & Sebastian. His songs are characterized by bright, charming samples blended perfectly with clever lyrics.

All hail Calvin Johnson

One of the best shows to grace Asheville this year

Last week at The Mothlight was a holy night for all involved. Olympia, Washington native and icon of the DIY music scene Calvin Johnson blessed us with his presence on Wednesday night. Johnson earns his legendary status with decades of musical trailblazing. Calvin founded K Records, an important indie record label with early releases from bands like Beck, Modest Mouse, and Built to Spill. Johnson also found personal success in hugely influential bands like Beat Happening, The Go Team and The Halo Benders.

The indie god makes an Asheville appearance

One of the most influential and interesting personalities of the modern independent music movement is none other than Calvin Johnson. Born in Olympia, WA in 1962, Johnson has truly done it all: musician, songwriter, disc jockey, record producer, label head, you name it. Tomorrow night he will bless The Mothlight with his Selector Dub Narcotic electronic project along with local techno opener Black Box Theory. Y'all better dance.

Brother Oliver and Triptych Soul rock ISIS Music Hall

Both bands put on one heck of a show

The main stage at ISIS Music Hall was all Brother Oliver this past Thursday night for their show with Triptych Soul. The Greenville based brothers were kicking off their East Coast tour at the cozy West Asheville venue and looked cool as ever up on stage playing new and old songs alike. Their new self-titled album was coming out the day after and their excitement for the world to hear it was visible in their energetic performance.

Checking in with Brother Oliver

The folky bros gear up to play ISIS and drop their new album

I got a chance to speak with Andrew Oliver from the psychedelic folk-rock band Brother Oliver, which is a music project that he and his brother Stephen started back in 2011. The brothers have a big show this Thursday evening at ISIS Music Hall along with Triptych Soul that will mark the start of their East Coast tour. To make things even more exciting, the day after the show their self-titled third album comes out for all the world to hear!
