The Mothlight prepares to be blessed by Calvin Johnson

One of the most influential and interesting personalities of the modern independent music movement is none other than Calvin Johnson. Born in Olympia, WA in 1962, Johnson has truly done it all: musician, songwriter, disc jockey, record producer, label head, you name it. Tomorrow night he will bless The Mothlight with his Selector Dub Narcotic electronic project along with local techno opener Black Box Theory. Y'all better dance.

Johnson's career has seen him as the founding member of bands like Cool Rays, Beat Happening, The Go Team, and The Halo Benders. Each of which went on to toy with mainstream perceptions of what music could and should sound like. Lo-fi recording techniques became the hallmark of Johnson's sound and focused the attention of the music on the lyrics and overall vibe rather than the classic musicianship.

Not only did he play music, but he also managed it. Johnson founded K Records in 1982 and little did he know that it would go on to be a historically important icon of the nineties DIY music movement. If you don't already see why Johnson playing here in Asheville at the cozy lil Mothlight is such a big deal, then just come on out tomorrow night and you'll see why.
