This past Saturday night at The Altamont Theatre was hands down the jazziest spot in Asheville. The Spring night was warm and created an adventurous and inviting mood for the excited crowd. The Brevard Jazz Professors came out to the cozy downtown venue to showcase not only their incredible musical skills, but also to educate the many concertgoers about their innovative music program.

The impressively sized group stepped onstage and were instantly met with warm applause from the quickly growing crowd. The venue was a perfect match for the performance; relaxing, comfortable and extremely intimate. The band's director, Juilliard-trained professor Michael Dease introduced the rest of the band proudly and they swiftly jumped into their opening pieces.

Watching these guys perform was simply a treat. There's no other way to describe it. Each member of the band is so clearly dedicated to not only jazz, but to the performance itself. Pianist Luther Allison was refreshingly energetic and seemed to lose himself in the sheer joy of performance which totally invigorated the crowd. Each member of the band possess such intense and genuine talent on their own, it can be happily overwhelming when you put them all on a stage together.

Drummers Jeff Sipe and Zach Adleman left the audience totally speechless a number of times, while Jacob Rodriguez and Brandon Lee dazzled us in the horn section. It's hard to express the emotion in the room when masters like these take on classics by legendary artists like Miles Davis, but let's just say the tone was powerful to say the least. Everyone had a blast, including the performers themselves. We absolutely cannot wait to see these folks in action again!
