They say you can’t miss what you never had, which in the case of nomadic Sumitra has—until recently—been a steady home. Born in New York to well travelled parents, she spent her upbringing moving frequently between Europe, Asia and North America, with songwriting functioning as the only constant in her ever-changing world. Now settled in suburban LA, Sumitra has finally created the album she imagined as a teenager, and “Still” is a celebration of her newfound peace.
Albeit her first as a solo performer, “Still” is the pianist/vocalist’s third full-length release, and featured are 12 songs that muse over her new life. Recognising that her experiences to date have been necessary in getting her to this point, Sumitra has been patiently waiting to be still for long enough to reflect on that journey, and the openness in her lyrics is inevitably the product of the varied cultures she’s been immersing in her whole life. As if Kate Bush teamed up with Bruce Hornsby, Still blurs the line between jazz and pop in a way that only a unique life could inspire
