Testimonial from Don Wendorf of Birmingham Alabama:
Congratulations to Pretty Little Goat, Owen and friends, for a spectacular performance tonight at Moonlight. I was tremendously impressed. All of the players were very expert on their instruments; they kept up an energetic and very engaging stage presence and audience rapport; and they presented a marvelous variety of musical sounds built around their core of an old-time Appalachian stringband/banjo-fiddle sound. They maintained a faithfulness to the roots of that genre while throwing in some more modern and varied sounds, like a 12 bar blues, some minstrel-jugband-early jazz sounds, and some lovely vocal harmonies more typical of bluegrass or gospel bands. I wasn't sure I'd go for the washboard and thought I'd miss the guitar; but, the washboard was an essential part of their core sound and a guitar might muddy it up or soften it or smooth it out too much. I loved that basic sound of the fiddle, banjo (Owen is scary good. I hate him), and mandolin with the bass providing all the bottom and tying it all together so nicely. That mandolin was very nice, sort of combining the low end, sweet, woody sound of an old Gibson A-model with a punchier sound of later F models. Their range of dynamics is excellent and they listen to each other so well. I hope the word gets out on these folks and they can quit their day jobs, at least for awhile.
